Advice ~ Summer 2008

Supplements:  Yeah or Nay?

Let me start by saying that supplements are never a substitute for good nutrition and a healthy, active lifestyle and outlook on life. That said, should you consider them, wherever you are in the continuum, even if you eat well and exercise regularly? In my opinion, the answer is a hearty YES!!!

Vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals, consumed as supplements in addition to the foods we eat, aren’t magic pills, but they can do a lot! We live in a world where toxins, contaminants, pesticides, artificial color, flavors, sweeteners, and preservatives are systemically present in the air we breathe, food we eat, water we drink, etc…

There is abundant research to support that making better choices, and supplementing appropriately, can impact our health by reducing our risk, and improving chronic diseases, slowing down the aging process, and enhancing energy and vitality.

Additionally, many supplements can mitigate the side effects experienced from some medications, if you must take them. But it’s hard to figure out the appropriate protocol for our individual needs without expert advice.

What follows is a sample case history, and minimal supplement protocol recommendation, to enrich and support individually tailored advice for nutrition and other lifestyle changes. Review what’s below, and please contact me for individually crafted recommendations, and interpretation of your health statistics, if you desire to improve your health status!
Sally is a 52 year old female accountant who is experiencing menopause, some newly discovered health issues, decreased energy, and some weight gain from a formerly healthy body weight. Her cholesterol has increased (total 240, LDL 150, HDL 55, triglycerides 195, and a deterioration in her total cholesterol to HDL ratio, indicating an increased risk of  heart disease) her blood pressure has increased, and she has a family history of heart disease.

In addition to analyzing her food intake and exercise habits, and making recommendations for improvement, I recommended she initiate a supplement regimen for review in 3 months.  We started with:
  • A comprehensive multi-vitamin mineral supplement (such as 2 per day)
  • Fish Oil 1200-2400 mg EPA/DHA from a high quality omega-3 product
(such as Super Omega-3 EPA/DHA with sesame fruit lignans and olive fruit)
  • A calcium/magnesium/vitamin D supplement (such as Osteonutrients II)
  • A CoEnzyme Q10 supplement, preferably Ubiquinol
(such as Super BioActive CoQ10 Ubiqionol)
